Participants will be briefed on:
- How the Supreme Court's recent decisions affects patient rights under HIPAA;
- The DOMA decisions effect on HIPA's definition of a "personal representative;"
- The need to reinforce workforce training for HIPAA compliance;
- Issues that arise when same sex married couples live in states that do not recognize these unions;
- Avoiding unauthorized disclosures and breaches under HIPAA and the HITECH Act while meeting HIPAA's requirements for patient access to PHI; and much, much more.
THE FACULTYDavid Szabo is a partner with the law firm of Edwards Wildman, where he is a member of the healthcare and privacy practice groups. He represents hospitals and other healthcare service providers as well as healthcare information technology companies and life sciences companies. David organized the first regional healthcare information exchange organization in Massachusetts, and recently helped it complete a merger to create a comprehensive health information exchange organization that serves the leading hospitals, health plans and medical groups in Massachusetts.
Dennis Melamed is president of Melamedia, LLC, a regulatory analysis and research firm. He is an adjunct professor at the Drexel College of Medicine where he teaches graduate level courses on health data stewardship, federal regulation of biomedical research and trends in medical device regulation
