Approximately 171,405,561 people have been affected by 1,832 HITECH Act breaches
through Feb. 17, according to a HIP/SA analysis of data released by the HHS Office for
Civil Rights (OCR). That suggested that 34 new breaches affected approximately
602,000 patients in incidents reported from Jan. 18 through Feb. 17.
The latest statistics indicated that:
- Breaches of network servers continued to affect the majority of patients;
- The theft of laptop computers was the leading reason for breaches; and
- Overall, theft was the leading reason for breaches.
