The rules governing the confidentiality and security of patient and employee health information have generated significant uncertainty and confusion. Even the definition of what constitutes an electronic health record remains unsettled. And as complicated and misconstrued as HIPAA has been, the transition into electronic health records is deepening the complexity of the regulations and serving as a basis to expand controls well beyond healthcare providers and health insurers to include organizations and employers in every business sector. The work is far from done, and one thing is clear. Healthcare organizations will play greater roles as gatekeepers and stewards of patient information as new players enter the health and patient data arena. It also means that healthcare organizations will face growing challenges in making decisions on when to release patient information and to whom. To help regulatory compliance professionals in healthcare and other industries affordably meet the immediate and near-term challenges facing their organizations in maintaining and using personal health and medical information, Melamedia, LLC, publishers of Health Information Privacy/Security Alert, launched a new education and training initiative. In its inaugural release, Melamedia, LLC produced three modules designed to meet the urgent needs of health and patient data managers as they confront immediate threats in adopting electronic record strategies that deal with an expanding universe of regulated health information. The modules are: Module I: Addressing The Immediate Threats. Enforcement of health data protection laws will increase and get tougher. In fact, there is a very real risk that the criticism over current government approaches may generate a substantial and overzealous backlash. Breach notification and identity theft are high on the political, regulatory and enforcement agendas. This module focuses on what you can and should do to protect your organization when someone in your organization makes a mistake or when your organization becomes a victim. Module II: Minimizing Risks with Electronic Records. The shift to electronic records involves more than converting paper files to electronic files. While the payoffs may be great so are the risks if organizations do not take into account a host of other issues that go along with the power of electronic information. This module provides crucial insights into managing the ongoing transition to electronic health and medical records and identifies the new vulnerabilities and pressure points that are emerging and strategies for addressing them. Module III: New Worlds of Data. The bottom line is that healthcare organizations and employers (meaning everyone else) will increasingly interact in meeting their respective regulatory obligations. This module provides both strategic and tactical perspectives on how to manage patient information as it crosses from one regulated industry to another and provides important guidance on developing your systems to operate effectively and efficiently in this complicated environment. |
